[En-en] Finder, order directory before files

One of most popular problems wose that swicher but also people that work in many directory is that File and Directory are mixed, and is strange because under linux and windows if I order for Type/Kind, folder have a priority, and are displayed before files!

Under Tiger/Leopard, there isnt' a good way for do that, but why? I've searched on google for few days without any result, other than the some tips like order by size or use finder replacement like path finder.

So, I decided to do all thing for make finder better, and the solution that I found is very very simple to do but very very usefull.

The first thing that I do wose, set details view and order by Kind

Now, you can see (on image), that Folders are displayed after "Archivie Zip".

So I searched in all my system files, the word "Folder" for rename it in "~Folder"

So go here:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/
and open with your preferred edito (Mine is TextMate) and open this file:
InfoPlist.string

You see something like that:

Add "~" (Alt+5) before "Folder", like the image and save the file.

Your editor ask for root password.

After save, restart your Finder, right click on Finder icon under pressing the key ALT and Reopen your Finder.

Reopen your directory and order it by Kind and you su this very very very beautifull result!

Very good no???

[Thanks MetalSho for their support!]

right click on Finder icon under pressing the key ALT

click col destro del mouse premendo ALT

cmq se non riesci riavvia e vedrai che se hai seguito alla lettera tutto funziona.

This does work - but loses Alphabetical listing, its a shame we can't have both :)
  14. Davide D'Agostino il November 05, 2007 19:00:

Thanks a lot! I was beginning to think there wasn't a decent workaround like this... unbelievable that Apple still hasn't implemented this feature in Leopard. Recently switched from Windows... mostly it's a good OS, but certain things Apple does are really frustrating -- like no support for nested folders on the iPod.
  18. Gorlog il November 05, 2007 19:00:
yes, each kind is sorted alphabetically, but files from several different kinds not in order with each other.. apple.rar will come after ziggy.jpg be cause jpeg file kind is listed before RAR
  19. Matt il November 05, 2007 19:00:
Actually, it didn't work for me... I spoke before trying it, sure that it would work. I tried a number of things, including giving ownership of the file back to root...still nothing.

    @Matt

    u have leopard or tiger?
  21. Alex il November 05, 2007 19:00:
It is Leopard. Just look at the sidebar on the left side. This is new in Leopard.
  22. Casper Pedersen il November 05, 2007 19:00:
Sweet, but I would still like Apple to fix Finder so that it's possible to sort in a more elaborate way.....
  23. Sloboz il November 05, 2007 19:00:
    bullshit...
  24. Kristoffer il November 05, 2007 19:00:
Nice, really nice, this was one of those things that was bugging me like hell, thanks alot mate.

    Cheers
  25. Raptor007 il November 05, 2007 19:00:
Didn't work for me! (I'm on Tiger, but the same Localization files exist.)
  26. Davide D'Agostino il November 05, 2007 19:00:
Strange, did you restart or logout your system?

  27. CSeenaStyle il November 05, 2007 19:00:
Odd- This works for me, but only in column view. For example, when I switch to list view (like the screenshots shown in the example above), my folders are no longer sorted first. Any ideas? By the way, when I modified InfoPlist.string, I was in column view. I doubt that has anything to do with it, but you never know...
